Mountain Gorillas have come a long way. In 1981 environmentalists estimated only 254 left in the world. Habitat destruction, ongoing civil conflict and poaching have been their main threat but thanks to intense international conservation efforts the population is slowly rising. This critically endangered species cannot survive in captivity and the only way to see them is trekking up to their natural habitat, misty cloud forests reaching up to 14,700 feet in altitude.
